Transplanting SOP
Share
Purpose:
The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to provide guidelines for transplanting seedlings into new media. This process is crucial for ensuring the successful growth and development of seedlings, allowing them to establish strong root systems in a new growing medium.
Equipment and Materials Required:
- Seedlings or Rooted Clones
- New growing media (potting soil, coco coir, rockwool, etc.)
- Plant containers or pots
- Watering can or hose
- Labels for plant identification
- Gloves
Procedure:
- Preparation:
- Select which growing media you'd like to grow in, based on what you feel comfortable with. Ensure that the new media is clean and free from any contaminants.
- Prepare the plant media or pots by cleaning them thoroughly and ensuring adequate drainage holes are present.
- Fill the containers with the new growing media, leaving enough space for the seedlings to be inserted.
- Watering:
- Water the seedlings thoroughly before transplanting to ensure they are well-hydrated.
- This will make it easier to remove them from their initial growing media and reduce stress during the transplanting process.
- Transplanting:
- Gently remove the seedlings from their original containers or trays, taking care not to damage the delicate roots.
- If necessary, use a small tool such as a trowel or dibber to carefully loosen the root ball.
- Make a hole in the new growing media using your fingers or the transplanting tool, ensuring it is deep enough to accommodate the seedling's roots.
- Place the seedling into the hole, ensuring that the roots are adequately covered with the new growing media.
- Gently press the media around the base of the seedling to provide stability.
- Labeling:
- Label each container or pot with the appropriate plant identification to avoid confusion.
- This step is crucial, especially when transplanting multiple types of seedlings, to ensure proper care and monitoring.
- Watering and Care:
- After transplanting, water the seedlings thoroughly but gently, ensuring that the new growing media is evenly moist.
- Monitor the moisture levels regularly and water as needed to prevent drying out or overwatering.
- Place the newly transplanted seedlings in an appropriate environment, considering factors such as light, temperature, and humidity.
- Provide any additional care specific to the type of seedling being transplanted, such as fertilization or pest control.
Important to Note:
- Gloves are highly recommended during this process to avoid contaminating the root's microbiomes
